This map was created in 2006 by me, David Barzelay. I geocoded the data using the addresses on the Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority website. Everything here is licensed under this Creative Commons license, so feel free to hack up your own stuff. In that spirit, here are XML files of the data I put together:
  • dcmetro.xml - Alphabetical list of all metro stations and their associated data
  • redline.xml - List of red line stops, in order, from Shady Grove to Glenmont.
  • blueline.xml - List of blue line stops, in order, from Franconia-Springfield to Largo Town Center.
  • orangeline.xml - List of orange line stops, in order, from Vienna/Fairfax-GMU to New Carrollton.
  • greenline.xml - List of green line stops, in order, from Branch Avenue to Greenbelt.
  • yellowline.xml - List of yellow line stops, in order, from Huntington to Mount Vernon Square-UDC.
There are certain limitations to this map:
  • Many metro stops have multiple entrances. In some cases, your choice of entrance may make it much more quick and easy, or more difficult and time consuming to get to and from the stop. As of this time, I'm not implementing separate entrance points, because it gets into problems like certain entrances being closed on certain days, etc. Be aware.
  • When computing the nearest metro stop, distances are "as the crow flies." The Google Maps API does not yet provide any interface for directions, so there is no fix for this yet. The result on my map will be correct in almost all cases, but with certain addresses, one stop may be geographically nearer, while another takes less time to walk to due to a diagonal street or something. Sorry.
  • This map uses the station addresses provided by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, at least when they can be found by Geocoders (such as the one used by Google Maps. If an address couldn't be found, I may have changed it slightly in order to reflect reality while still being searchable. Please let me know if you find a station whose address can't be found, by email at david DOT barzelay AT gmail.com
