I thought at first that this had to be a joke, but there are reliable sources in that WP article discussing this "phenomenon". This is sort of like the South Korean equivalent of an African woman stealing a man's penis with her magic, I think.

From my time living in South Korea, I can assure you that fan death is a very real, universal (and hilarious) fear there.
