Mini Link: http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5iXTt0apYsU9fIbk6Lg7B-q6zA2wgD8TA1HN80These are my kinda thieves. They made a hole in the wall of a warehouse and managed to make off with 17 tons of Christmas ham and bacon in one night! And the thieves left a note that said, "Thanks. Merry Christmas." See? At least they were polite about it.
But the thing that really blows my mind is that seventeen tons of ham and bacon are only worth $88,000. I never really considered buying in bulk like that, but I suppose it makes sense. Next time I have $88,000, I know what I'm doing. It seems like I shouldn't be able to afford a whole ton of anything, even with all my savings (which is like $4000). I kind of want to buy one ton of something, just so I can say I have a ton of it. And edible would really be best. "Hey guys, want to come to my place? I have two thousand pounds of bacon we can munch on." Who would turn down that invitation?

Once my dad bought half of a side of beef. And though that clearly is no where near 17 tons, my parents had a beef supply for a least a year. And that's with giving me a good bit of it to bring back to school whenever I visited. I suppose a beef party would really be the way to go (or pork party if you had ham and bacon) when you find yourself with a large quantity of meat.

Was it Christmas ham or... Hanukkah ham?

I would love to get a side of beef. I wonder how much money would be saved buying meat in bulk like that.
I bet not much. It seems to me like the butcher's markup is very little, or else there wouldn't be so much consistency in meat prices at different shops. So I actually don't think I'd save all that much by buying in extreme bulk.
It's kinda like buying fish. These days, I greatly prefer to buy whole fish (assuming it's a reasonably sized fish like a snapper or something), because it stays much fresher when it hasn't been butchered. Price-wise, if all you're going to eat from the fish are the fillets, the cost is about equal to just buying the fillets. But, by buying the whole fish, you get the cheeks, as well as the carcass for making fish stocks and consommes. I don't save money, but I do get better product without spending more.

Were you at Jordan's meat party back in the day?

I don't think so. Wait, was that the one where he got tons of barbecue from First Choice? I think I missed most of it, but arrived for some of the leftovers. Was it maybe right before a LAN party, and he brought the leftovers to the LAN party at Mark's? Or am I remembering that incorrectly?
