I got my first ever roux burn the other day. I was whisking some brick roux that was going to thicken some gravy. I somehow started to whisk a bit too vigorously, and a bit of the roux splattered onto my arm. Just a tiny spot of roux, maybe 1/64 tsp, but it basically melted many layers of skin wherever it touched me. So now I have this little, deep, spider-bite-looking wound on my arm... and I'm a little proud. It's a battle scar.
I feel like it's a rite of passage for serious cooks, much like the hundreds of small (and sometimes less small) cuts I've sustained while honing my knife skills. At some point, you splash some roux on yourself and burn the shit out of wherever it splatters. Then after that, you're more careful with the roux. And I now have first-hand experience of why roux is sometimes called "Cajun napalm."

Well done, I suppose. My boyfriend's arms are marred by scars and burns and he wears them with pride. All I have is one scar from a cut I got while chopping onions...but I'm not the cook/chef that you are. Have fun.

Also, I'm starting to think I must be your biggest fan, at least as far as comments are concerned. I don't know if I should be proud since I like your blog of if you should be ashamed since I'm a college friend.

Does the knife-tongue cut count for this pride issue?

Christy, I am proud to have you commenting. You're not just a college friend, you're an always friend. Even if our sole communication is through blog posts and comments. Anyway, I stopped blogging for so long that I lost most of my readers, so now the only people who see my posts are 1) LJ users, 2) people who use RSS readers. Personally, I can't fathom why anyone in the world is not using an RSS reader.
And Cara, no, I'm not proud of that at all. That was just a really boneheaded thing to do. Plus, it's a hidden wound.

I cut off my fingertip chopping an onion... approximately ten minutes before my brother-in-law was going to show up for a visit.
Oh, and WTF is an RSS reader? Please explain for the non-geeky (though I'm not sure I qualify as non-geeky).

Jeff, when I cut my finger it was right before an old high school friend was supposed to drop by our house at the Villa in Nashville. I think I resorted to duct tape.
And try www.reader.google.com. It's great.
And Barzelay, your comment made me feel all warm and fuzzy. I treasure your friendship (and your blog). Thanks. : )
