Americans Believe That NASA Gets 24% Of National Budget

It's actually about 0.58%. But people nevertheless think NASA gets nearly as much as they think the Department Of Defense gets (33%, with the actual portion being about 21%). Says one survey respondent when informed of the actual NASA funding allocation, "No wonder we haven't gone anywhere!"

Oh, my gosh...that really makes me want to cry. No wonder so many people think NASA should be less funded.

I don't know if you've seen this:

I haven't seen anything else on this -- not sure if he announced it today or not. But I'm glad Obama wants to fund education, just very, very disappointed that he would think that NASA's budget is the proper place to get the money. Anyway, he lost whatever support he had from me.

When you grow up in a space family, you're always amazed at how little people know about the space program. Example: I got to go to the Discovery launch a few months ago, and when I returned and told people at work about it, one guy said, "What's the big deal, aren't shuttle launches pretty much routine now?" I almost ripped his head off.

So it doesn't surprise me people are ignorant about NASA's budget.

And if Obama really wants to pull money for education in NASA's budget (link didn't work) instead of the myriad other better places it could come from (I've always advocated pulling it from the Drug War), then I know at least three people whose potential support he just lost.

Mike, I've never been to a launch before and I'm going to the next one, so I am super excited.

From the article:

"The cost of the early education plan would come partly from delaying the NASA Constellation Program for five years, cutting costs in the government procurement process and auctioning surplus federal property."
