Oscar Nominations Are Out

The Academy has released its nominations for 2006. Nothing too surprising there, although there are some pretty notable absences.

My top movies list is imminent, but there are at least 4 more movies that I have to see first: Notes On A Scandal, Dreamgirls, Volver, and Pan's Labyrinth. Then there a bunch of others that I'd like to see, but will be willing to make a list without doing so.

Can't figure out how to comment on your mini-link, so let me just say how stoked I am to have Clive Owen play Marlow. The Big Sleep and Murder My Sweet are 2 of my favorite films noir, which is - in turn - my favorite genre. I cannot WAIT to see Owen in action.

I see no reason why he can't play an American. He was perfectly capable of doing an American accent in Inside Man.

I am greatly anticipating your list. I only hope you limit it to 10 (a list of 15 is for pussies)

Ten is only slightly less arbitrary than any other number. And even in the case of ten, it's only slightly less arbitrary because of the entirely arbitrary fact that we use base-10.

As for pure aesthetics, it seems to me like the ideal would be to choose a single best movie, and say no more. Such a system would have the most unity. But most of the reason I do these lists is to try to convince my friends to go and see these movies that they missed, or listen to the albums that they hadn't. And, unfortunately, I tend to find that you, my friends, miss more than ten that I feel are particularly worthy. But we'll see. I suspect fifteen.

I advocate not limiting it to a number. Compile a list of noteworthy movies and see how many you end up with. Incidentally, the last three 2006 movies I've seen have been good-to-excellent, so I may have to begin eating my hat on saying it was a bad year for movies. Consumption will likely finish after your list is posted.
