Aaaaand, I've got a source for miracle fruit. I'm gonna order a bunch of it, and the marginal cost for ordering extra is only $1 per fruit. So, here's the plan:
Everyone who wants to try miracle fruit can come over on Saturday around 9:00pm. I'll have a bunch of sour and bitter foods for tasting, but you should plan on eating dinner before you come. You can just kick in one measly buck for your very own miracle fruit. So... who's in? Anyone can come, even if we've never met. Just leave a comment and I'll drop you an email to confirm (I'm david at barzelay D.O.T. net).
After the miracle fruit experience, we can party with the alcohol that you should also bring if you wish.

Hello David,
I am Fred. It's been about 2 years since I became a regular reader of your blog, but this is actually my first comment.
Well, I did not know the "miracle fruit" at all, was surprised at the photo in your blog because of the label written in Japanese.
I may go to Japan sometime soon (next week maybe), will try it. There is a miracle fruit cafe in Tokyo.

This is a Japanese site, you can click the bottom of the page to see a menu. You may see test tubes on the menu...

Yeah, I read about that cafe. Very cool. Let me know what you think of the cafe. By the end of all of this, I may end up being the foremost expert on miracle fruit in the greater DC area.

Hey David,
In your research have you heard of anywhere in the NYC area that carries this stuff? My taste buds need some lovin'.

Sounds fun. Wish I was near you, I'd be all about it. I can't wait to read a follow up of the results.

Jon, you might try Asian markets in Chinatown. They import all sorts of banned goods. Otherwise, the guy I'm getting them from can probably ship them to you as well. If it turns out that my transaction goes smoothly, I'll let you know how to contact him.

Can't wait to hear how it goes...I wish I could join the party.

David, I passed along your miracle fruit invite and it seems to have pressed some buttons. Here are some of the comments your event has elicited (in case you were interested).
From a friend whose father is a lawyer for Florida Crystals:
"Do you personally know this David guy with the "miracle" fruit? It sounds like one of those African scams where you send me $50 so I can send you $5000, you know? And miraculin? Sheesh.
Don't forget to mention to everyone there that 1) Splenda is made with chlorine and very, very bad for your health and 2) cane sugar is wonderful and good for you, to boot. I don't know anything about beet sugar, except that it can be found in packets in many restaurants, labeled simply as "sugar" whereas cane sugar is identified as pure cane sugar. Suspicious beet sugar. Now stop letting them defame the sugar companies.
Big Sugar's onto him. ooga booga"
From a male friend who supposes that you maintain less than honourable intentions:
"The bright ones are the ones that find the way to drug masses of people into doing things they wouldn't normally do ... (Dead giveaway would be disproportionate number of women to men on the invite list) ;)
Also "Big Sugar"? Is he serious??"
