Feedback Loop

How are people liking the Mini-Links? Clearly they are better than the old del.icio.us feed on the side that I'm sure few people looked at. Any complaints about the Mini-Links, either on the blog or in the RSS feed?

Also, would you prefer that I made commenting available on the Mini-Links? Do people have a desire to comment on just links?

I agree that they are better than del.icio, but I usually just click on them without having the desire to comment (no offense).

I actually liked the delicious links a lot better. It's annoying to have the RSS feed look like you have new entries only to find out it's just some links. Also, it pushes your real content down the page a lot more quickly. If you keep having lots of minilinks, I'm probably just going to start ignoring your RSS feed and only clicking on it when it builds up.

I've seen a few sites use a plugin that puts one entry up at the end of the day with the all the day's delicious links. Something like that might be a decent compromise.

I'm OK with them, but they don't show up as links in the feed, and copying them and pasting them into a browser is a bit of a pain.

Jay - I had the titles of the posts linked to the articles, but you're right. I should have just made the links clickable, too. Done.

Jacob - I hear you. I've created two additional feeds for you or anyone else who wishes to use them. A "Full Posts Only" feed with just the full posts at http://www.barzelay.net/posts.xml, and a "Mini-Links Only" feed with just the mini-links at http://www.barzelay.net/mini-links.xml. The normal feed with full posts and mini-links is still available at http://www.barzelay.net/index.xml, and will remain my flagship product.

Rob - That's what I figured. I did extra work to remove the commenting and all from the mini-links because I figured no one would want to. But then the masses (one person) told me they wished they could comment on the mini-links. Sooo, we have one vote each way. I guess it'll remain under advisement. Anyone else have an opinion on comments on mini-links?

I enabled comments on my mini-links but I think I've only had a couple of comments on them.

Since I read your blog from the website and not via RSS feed, your special feeds don't help me - and the mini-links do seem like they're real posts and push the rest of the stuff down and are, therefore, kind of annoying. I actually just prefer the times when you post a shitload of links all in one post with commentary from you. Because I like the commentary (as opposed to just having the links down the right side of your site), but if they're all listed in one post, I can take the time and go through the links all at once if I so desire...and I can comment on that post if I want.

Those posts never received many comments. I'd be happy to enable comments on the mini-links, if people want that.

You really ought to start using RSS, by the way. It's awesome. But when you say that it pushes posts down, you just mean that you have to scroll farther? I used to have the most recent 10 entries. Now I have the most recent 20, which ends up being around the same number of full posts. If it turns out that the ratio of mini-links to full posts is greater than 1:1, then I can up the number of posts on the frontpage. Would that help?

I just don't like all the scrolling... And if I use RSS, then what's the point of all the work you put into your site layout?

Well, you'd still have to come here to comment, I guess. I don't think the Mini-Links make for an unreasonable amount of scrolling. A lot of that perception might just be that I've been posting much more often lately than I did for the last six months or so, so posts that aren't all that old are getting buried quicker. Like this one.
