One of my new housemates, Noah, turned twenty-four on Friday. Scott and Natasha (my other two housemates) bought him a really nice cake for his birthday, but Noah ended up not being around that night. We decided to save it for the following night. I had to defend the cake from a drunk and munchies-having Scott and Natasha later, but successfully saved the cake. So on Saturday night, when their friends Jane and her boyfriend (name?) were in the house as well, we decided to do the whole birthday cake routine for Noah.
Noah was in his room with the door shut, and we thought there was a chance he was asleep (he sometimes sleeps odd hours), but we figured that it would be okay to wake him up for the occasion. So Scott got some candles. We put them into the cake in what we intended to be the digits "24" but ended up just being "2" with some extra candles filling the gaps. After lighting the candles, the whole group ceremoniously proceeded down the hall toward his room.
When we got to his door, we all assembled in front of it. Scott knocked on his door several times, and then we all started in a loud, giddy, and allegedly infringing rendition of "Happy Birthday." When we were all finished, there were still no stirrings from Noah's room. So Scott knocked again, very loudly this time, and said something like, "Noah, dude, come out here. We're trying to throw you a birthday party." Still no stirring.
We waited for a while, and then I went and pounded quite loud on his door. When there was still no answer, I opened his door and peeked in. He was definitely not in the room!
He had apparently left earlier and we didn't realize it. So yeah. We threw a birthday party for a guy who wasn't there. This is probably the first time I've ever celebrated the birthday of someone who isn't really there where I didn't get presents and turkey.
