Day 2

I am in a motel room in Kearney, Nebraska. Today involved lots of driving through flat, featureless farmland in very wide states. I stopped into a Best Buy outside Chicago this morning, bought new RAM, then promptly returned said RAM when it failed to address my laptop's problem. Other stuff:

  • Detours taken: 3
  • Temperature range encountered: 43 F - 93 F
  • Outlet malls shopped: 2
    • Clothing items purchased: 2
    • Cooking items purchased: 4
  • Former Presidents' boyhood homes passed by: 2
  • Tornadoes encountered: 0
  • Boring states passed through: 3
  • Total cost of road tolls so far: >$40
  • Underwhelming regional theme parks passed: 3
  • I also saw the International Wrestling Institute & Museum
  • Music:
    • The National - Alligator
    • Paul Simon - Rhythm Of The Saints
    • Self - Subliminal Plastic Motives
    • Rush - Permanent Waves
    • Sunset Rubdown - Snake's Got A Leg
    • Mates Of State - Bring It Back
    • Radiohead - Kid A
    • plus crazy Mexican radio for a while and very cool Omaha radio for a while

thank you for staying in a motel and not on the side of the road in your trunk. although...i do doubt that anything bad would happen to you in kearney, nebraska. that is not, however, a go-ahead to sleep in your car in whatever small po-dunk town you find yourself in tonight!

You need this song, unfortunately I can only find it on YTMND.com...it's by heywood banks:

And yes, that's the entire song.

Hey, let's not go badmouthing Nebraska now. A fine state which provides much of the nation's corn, soy, beef, and Dinsmores. Glad you enjoyed the Omaha radio. This post may come too late, but should you have some extra time and gas, you could visit fabulous carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska.

Also, The Colbert Report did a spot on Nebraska's second district, which is basically Omaha. Fairly funny.

In any event, drive safe and savor beautiful Nebraska while you can.

hey you! I hope you're doing well. I miss you and think of you often. I had a drem about you the other night. I was trying to pack a lunch for you and we were fighting about whether to put in fruit or chips. Then Claire Suddath ran in and said "so and so and so and so are upstairs having sex!" and we were like "yeah!" Because it's apparently fun to watch people have sex. So we all ran upstairs and watched them. And we weren't mad at each other anymore. And then I found five dollars.

My brother is staying with me and he misses you, too. He talks about you all the time. I think he's going to call you. He read your blog yesterday.

Loooove,
Lizzie

What do you think of "Bring it Back"? I don't really like it. I think it's more of the same Mates (My Solo Project is my favorite) , but just with more bleeping type noises...sort of how I'm afraid a new Postal Service album might come out.

Dont you realize that you're right around the corner from Funk, Nebraska?

You should have driven through Kansas City and stayed with my mom. She probably would have made dinner.

I listened to some of the Rhythm of the Saints the other night on the drive to Portland - and then listened to Graceland on the way back. Regarding Bring it Back, I think it's not as good, but a couple songs are great. And Sunset Rubdown is ok...again, a couple of great songs - and a lot of mediocre stuff.

I saw Architecture in Helsinki the other night. I loved it. I kind of want to hang out with them. If I hadn't had to drive 2 hours back to Eugene and go to class the next morning, I could have. They were hanging out at happy hour at the upstairs bar after the show.

Yeah, Architecture In Helsinki is great. I love that they actually duplicated all the silly percussion from the album. Kansas City was farther South than I was going.

Brint It Back is just alright. It's over-produced. They had a good, pared-down sound going and they kinda screwed it up.
