Hot Dogs

Why are hot dogs so delicious? I liked them as a kid, but pretty much hated them between age eight and age twenty. And then I gloriously rediscovered them, finding that my contraband dorm-room toaster oven made delicious hot dogs quickly. They're perfect for lunch.

Haters might complain about the contents of hot dogs. But I don't even care whether they're all beef franks. I'm on record saying that I'll eat pretty much anything, so it isn't troubling in terms of health.

They're just so great. The perfect hot dog is made as follows:

  1. Bake the hot dog.
  2. Steam the bun.
  3. Broil the hot dog.
  4. Toast the bun.
  5. Add condiments.
  6. Eat.

Personally, I add a little bit of mustard, a lot of ketchup, and pepper. Clearly, only Heinz ketchup will do. See, there's something fancy even about my taste for hot dogs, albeit fancy ketchup.

Oh, and another thing... ketchup is ketchup. It is not catsup. Catsup is what off-brands make when they're trying to stear clear of real ketchup's trademarks. I don't mean to be an apologist for Big Tomato here, but Heinz ketchup is vastly superior to all other ketchups.

So, hot dogs... what do you think? Merely a delicious food, or transcendent and spiritual mana from heaven?

If you ever find yourself in Spring Valley (48th and Mass NW), stop by Wagshal's Market and get one of their hot dogs. Quality stuff.

Heinz Ketchup is definitely the ketchup conneseur's ketchup. Hunt's is a joke. Hunts makes fine cans of tomoatoes for making homemade tomato sauces, but their ketchup has always lacked something in comparison to Heinz.

I like to attribute Heinz's superiority to their location. If you pick up a bottle and check it out, you'll see that its made in the mecca of Pittsburgh, PA.

my friend erin used to say that the reason she loved hot dogs was because it allowed her to consume as many animals as possible in a singular food product (she was notorious for her distaste of animal rights groups, especially PETA).

i myself have always enjoyed hot dogs...and the more junk that's in them, the better. except those ill-fated cheese-dogs...gross.

There is absolutely nothing better to eat on a summer evening at the ballpark than a steamed hot dog topped with mustard and onions. People may disagree as far as toppings, but anyone who disputes the dog as the quintessential ballgame food has no taste. By which I mean different taste than me.

Tofu dogs are delicious and healthy, and they taste exactly like a meat hot dog. It's the closest match between a faux-meat product and an actual meat product that I've tasted thusfar. I think that is because there may not be actual meat in hot dogs - just filling, coloring and beef juice flavor.

If you were a hot dog... and you were starving... would you eat yourself?

There ain't nothin' better than a Half Smoke from Ben's Chili Bowl. We ought to make plans to get out there soon.

My current temp job is with Heinz. There are ketchup products everywhere. There's even a Heinz gift shop. I too gave up hot dogs...until we moved to Pittsburgh. There are hot dogs everywhere! I actually had one today, from a place called "Hot Dogma," run by a church group. Mmm. Nothin' better than a holy hot dog.
